The time of the season, known as "setsu," has been considered a period when evil spirits are more likely to enter since ancient times.
It is said that people used to make dolls out of paper and stroke their bodies with them to transfer impurities to the dolls, which were then floated down a river to ward off evil spirits.
This custom is considered the root of the current Hina Matsuri.
