The time of the season, known as "setsu," has been considered a period when evil spirits are more likely to enter since ancient times.
It is said that this custom, where people would stroke their bodies with dolls made of paper and transfer impurities to the dolls before floating them down a river to ward off evil spirits, is the root of the current Hinamatsuri festival.
