September's Edo Side Dish "Simmered Pumpkin"

NoticeRestaurant

September's 【Edo Side Dish】 (Edo Okazu) "Simmered Pumpkin"
Pumpkin (Kara-nasu), an essential ingredient on the tables of common people in Edo during autumn, was cargo from a Portuguese shipwreck that drifted ashore in what is now Oita Prefecture in the 16th century, and is considered the direct ancestor of the Japanese pumpkin.

At that time, foreign countries were only recognized as Tang (present-day China), so this vegetable, which resembled a foreign eggplant, was called "Tang eggplant." (In the Kansai region, it is called "Nankin.")

In the Edo period, when sweets were scarce, crops that were sweet and had a long shelf life were highly valued and widely used not only in simmered dishes but also in sweets.

At our restaurant, we serve it simmered as September's Edo side dish for breakfast.

Please enjoy it!
